Inherent Gifts was the first in a series, and it was very important that we not only create a compelling cover for the first novel, but also create a consistent image for the ongoing series. A second novel and collection of bonus short stories were released, all with covers in the same firey theme.

The biggest challenge was actually finding a sufficient volume of stock photos of two models suitable for the repeating main characters, while staying in budget. I also enjoyed the challenges of attaching the heads of those models to bodies from other photographs entirely in a believable way (can you find the two places I did that?), and covering the one fellow’s naked body in bleeding jingle-bell piercings.
And I have to say, fire and smoke are really fun to draw. The backgrounds and flames are not from stock photographs. I created them in photoshop almost entirely from scratch using special brushes, textures, and filters.
